Nací en Bolivia, en La Paz, en 1910. Después de una estancia fugaz en la Escuela de Medicina, recibí mi titulación en Medicina en 1936 por la Universidad Mayor de San Simón. Por un tiempo residí en Buenos Aires (Argentina), y también en Caracas (Venezuela), en donde dirigí la filial local de lo que se llamaba en aquella época Esso Oil. También fui neurocirujano en ejercicio y editor de la revista revolucionaria El Fomento. A pesar de mis múltiples tareas, también logré publicar una serie de investigaciones sobre Filosofía de la Ciencia, Biología de Poblaciones, Evolución y Ecología.
